Poetry Apps

5 Free Poetry Apps you should download for your iGadget (in no particular order)

1. Poetry by The Poetry Foundation

This app gives you access to hundreds of poems, including many classic works and poems published in Poetry Magazine. Just shake your iPhone to “spin” for a poems that fit a certain mood and topic, select a mood and topic manually, or browse by author. Discover new poets and poems, and save your favorites.

2. Poetry Daily

As you’ve no doubt guessed, this app features a poem of the day. Poems are drawn from both large and independent presses. You can scroll back through previous days’ poems or let the app select a random poem. One unique feature that I find interesting is the “Newsroom” which links to news articles, reviews, and essays.

3. Poetry Everywhere

Poetry Foundation has their hands in this one, also, as does WGBH and Garrison Keillor. This app features short videos of well-known poets reading selected poems. Each video is introduced by Garrison Keillor. There aren’t many videos, yet, but each update adds more.

4. Asinine Poetry

Yes, the poems featured in this app really are asinine. And well worth your time. Though the content is intentionally not serious, the quality of writing is superb. The app also links to their podcast.

5. Shakespeare

Back to the serious literature, I guess. There’s a free app, simply titled Shakespeare that includes his complete works: 41 plays (even the disputed ones), 154 sonnets, and 6 poems.

Are there any poetry apps that you recommend?
